Speech ability and reading skill

After more than 13 years teaching the kindergarten reading and writing, I've faced many kids with many problems. But among all of problems, there is a major problem that obstruct children to acquire reading skill; their speech ability.  The children who can't pronounce the words correctly mostly have difficulty to learn how to read and write.

Normal children usually have trouble only to pronounce the letter r but some children have trouble to distinguish  how to pronounce the letters p, b, and m or t, d and  s, p and f  some even have trouble to pronounce h.  How can  these children can write correctly  when they can't pronounce the word they read properly. It needs a great effort to make these kind of children able to read and write. Usually if I found this case I start by pronouncing the words in front of the mirror.  I let them see how I move my mouth and they will see themselves in their mirror and compare our mouth's movement. Mostly this exercise gives a great impact to the children. Their speech is improved. But still no matter how good I am as a teacher, the children meet me only two/three hours a week. Still the parent's role is very important to practice  more at home.


Therefore if your child has lower speech ability, don't be neglected, go to the speech therapy or practice at home using the mirror. It allows  you and your child to be alone together. Children are children they love to be with their parents.

Setelah lebih dari 13 tahun mengajar TK membaca dan menulis, saya telah menghadapi banyak anak dengan banyak masalah. Tapi di antara semua masalah, ada masalah utama yang menghambat anak untuk memperoleh keterampilan membaca yaitu kemampuan bicara mereka. Anak-anak yang tidak bisa mengucapkan kata-kata dengan benar sebagian besar mengalami kesulitan untuk belajar bagaimana membaca dan menulis.

Anak normal biasanya memiliki kesulitan hanya untuk mengucapkan huruf r tetapi beberapa anak mengalami kesulitan untuk membedakan bagaimana mengucapkan huruf p, b, dan m atau t, d dan s, p dan f beberapa bahkan memiliki kesulitan mengucapkan huruf h. Bagaimana bisa anak-anak ini dapat menulis dengan benar jika mereka tidak bisa mengucapkan kata yang mereka baca dengan benar. Perlu upaya besar untuk membuat anak semacam ini  bisa membaca dan menulis. Biasanya jika saya menemukan hal ini saya mulai dengan mengucapkan kata-kata di depan cermin. Saya biarkan mereka melihat bagaimana saya menggerakkan mulut saya dan mereka akan melihat diri mereka di cermin dan membandingkan gerakan mulut kami. Kebanyakan latihan ini memberikan dampak yang besar untuk anak-anak.  kemampuan bicara mereka meningkat. Tapi tetap tidak peduli seberapa baik saya sebagai guru, anak-anak bertemu saya hanya dua / tiga jam seminggu.Oleh karena itu peran orang tua sangat penting untuk berlatih lebih banyak di rumah.

Oleh karena itu jika anak Anda memiliki kemampuan berbicara yang rendah, jangan diabaikan, pergi ke terapi wicara atau praktek di rumah dengan menggunakan cermin. Hal ini memungkinkan Anda dan anak Anda untuk menyendiri bersama-sama. Anak-anak adalah anak-anak  mereka sangat suka bersama orang tua mereka.

Making Friends

Teaching children actually is making friends with them. Children are children, they don't like grow up and teacher : and mostly like the grow up, children hate preaching. To have a successful class, teachers need to put themselves in the children shoes. Teaching writing and reading to the children are very unique. If the teachers show they know everything, the children will get scared easily. Something that the teachers should know, to make the children able to learn. They have first to make the children feel comfortable. 

Easy talking than doing , of course. But there is  the firs rule of everything. Children, like the grow up they worry with a lot of things. From their looks, friends, ghost until a scary adult. Because children  are small, physically and mentally. It makes sense that they are over sensitive than the grow up. Such reason makes some people believe to talk tenderly to the children.

But talking tenderly to the children is not the only solution, we experienced teaching a child who cried loudly when he was alone with the teacher but when he was with another child, he was very happy. From our experience we decided that all the children who will study in our school should go through trial before they started their course.

The trial means to make friends with the children first, to make sure that the children feel comfort when they  study at our school. Our school has a motto that "we teach what you need". We also teach the parents who wants to help their children study faster.

Bad Attitude And Reading Skill

Parent nowadays has changed their role. If in the past a woman role was taking care of her children and her husband, and the husband become the only bread winner. But now women become a bread winner like men, the problem is what about the children ?

Since both parents work, in Indonesia, the case usually is solved by making the grandmother as the children care taker,  or sometimes they hire a  nanny and let all the children needs in her hand, or worse they leave the children to a maid. As a result many children have bad attitude because they miss the parents importance role. This bad attitude include tantrums, laziness and bad mood.

We faced many children who doesn't have problem in speech and are obviously smart but they are lazy, have bad mood and throw tantrum. They don't like to study, and they will cry more if the parent stays with her/him. Perhaps compare to any problems, this intern problem is very difficult to solve. No matter how good the program if the children refuse even to sit, I really can't do anything. But if I can just able to make these kind of  children sit and study, they will successfully able to read and write fast. And once they're able to read and write, the kid will have a better attitude.

Learn reading and writing are full with rules that a kid has to follow.They must remember all the letters and write it one by one. They have to understand how those letters make the sounds and how to read them. After that they also have to be able to encode the verbal language into the writing form.

It sounds tough for the young kid ? Of course but many children are successfully able to read and write at age 5. Especially if the kid is normal and doesn't have problem with attitude.

Orang tua  saat ini telah merubah peran mereka. Jika di masa lalu peran wanita mengurus anak-anaknya dan suaminya, dan suami menjadi satu-satunya pencari nafkah. Tapi sekarang wanita menjadi pencari nafkah seperti pria, masalahnya adalah bagaimana dengan anak-anak?


Karena kedua orang tua bekerja, di Indonesia, kasus ini biasanya diselesaikan dengan membuat nenek sebagai perawat anak-nak, atau kadang-kadang mereka memperkerjakan pengasuh dan membiarkan kebutuhan semua anak di tangannya, atau lebih buruk mereka meninggalkan anak-anak pada pembantu. Akibatnya banyak anak memiliki sikap buruk karena mereka kehilangan peran orang tua yang sangat penting. Sikap buruk ini termasuk amukan, kemalasan dan suasana hati yang buruk.


Saya menghadapi banyak anak-anak yang tidak memiliki masalah dalam berbicara dan jelas pintar tapi mereka malas, memiliki suasana hati yang buruk dan mengamuk. Mereka tidak suka belajar, dan mereka akan menangis lebih jika orang tua bersama dengan dia . Mungkin dibandingkan dengan masalah lain, masalah intern ini sangat sulit untuk dipecahkan. Tidak peduli seberapa baik program jika anak-anak menolak bahkan untuk duduk, saya benar-benar tidak bisa melakukan apa-apa. Tapi kalau kami  mampu membuat semacam  anak ini duduk dan belajar, mereka akan berhasil membaca dan menulis cepat. Dan begitu mereka bisa membaca dan menulis, anak akan memiliki sikap yang lebih baik.

Belajar membaca dan menulis penuh dengan aturan yang anak-anak harus ikuti.mereka harus mengingat semua huruf dan menuliskanya satu per satu. Mereka harus memahami bagaimana huruf huruf itu membuat suara dan cara membacanya. Setelah itu mereka juga harus mampu untuk mengkodekan bahasa verbal ke dalam bentuk tulisan.
 
Kedengarannya sulit bagi anak-anak? Tentu saja tetapi banyak anak yang berhasil mampu membaca dan menulis pada usia 5 tahun. Apalagi jika anak itu normal dan tidak memiliki masalah dengan sikap.
